WHAT IS AP (ADVANCE PLACEMENT)?
What is the Advanced Placement (AP) Program?
If you have just started or are about to start high school, if you are thinking of studying abroad, what is the Advanced Placement? You are wondering about the answer to your question. We can start by stating that it includes advanced courses and that it is a program that will give you extra credit in your university education process.
Advanced Placement was created in the mid-1950s to bridge the gap between high school and university. AP offered 11 courses in 1952 as a pilot program. In 1956, the College Board took over the management and changed its name to "The College Board Advanced Placement" and formalized the AP program.
The AP program, which you can take from schools that have an agreement with the College Board, administers exams to students who complete the 2-year curriculum. It certifies their education by offering advanced placement diploma or AP certificate to those who successfully complete the exams. This situation provides many advantages in the university process and university.
The AP Program provides students with the opportunity to take college-level courses in high school and be exempt from those courses at university. Particularly, during the admission phase of students' overseas university applications, the fact that a student has taken AP courses and passed the exams successfully in high school is considered as an indicator of his readiness for academic education.
Students who take AP courses and pass the exams are more advantageous than students who make standard applications during the application process to universities, and they also have the chance to be exempt from these courses when they start university. They can also study more easily in double-major programs.
Some high schools in Turkey also offer the AP program. Students participating in the AP diploma program take AP courses in addition to the Turkish curriculum. Therefore, students need to plan this process well.

Difference Between AP and IB
The IB Diploma and AP programs are among the important international programs offered in many high schools around the world. Although they have common points with their advantages during the university period, they differ from each other in many areas. You can review the list of differences between AP and IB below.
- AP offers university-oriented courses in line with the curriculum according to the student's interests and goals. IB, on the other hand, provides an internationally valid diploma after high school education and provides admission to the university according to the diploma score.
- In the AP program, students take university-oriented courses according to their interests. In the IB program, there are compulsory courses in the program content. The student must take courses in the fields of art, language, culture and science.
- To participate in the IB program, certain conditions must be met. Although there are additional tests applied by the schools in the AP program, all students with academic qualifications can participate in general.
- The AP program specializes in the student's area of interest. The IB diploma program aims to develop important skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, essay and article writing, which are required in all academic fields.
- You do not have to take AP classes before taking AP exams. However, in order to receive an IB Diploma, it is necessary to take the courses before the exam.
- AP exams usually contain multiple choice courses. Exams in the IB are usually short-answer questions, data-based questions, and essay writing.
- The IB diploma program is more expensive than the AP program.
- AP scoring ranges from 1-5, while in IB programs it ranges from 1-7.
What Should Be Done During the AP Exam Preparation Process?
The most prestigious universities in the world accept students with the AP program. In this sense, the AP courses that students will take in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades are important. Having a good command of the exam format during the preparation process gives students a significant advantage. Another important issue, of course, is to use time correctly. During the exam, the questions do not need to be answered in order. In this sense, it is important for students to prioritize the questions they know. Fighting exam stress creates the psychological dimension of the job. Being able to eliminate or minimize exam stress helps to increase the success rate.
